When Should You Put Up Christmas Lights in Chicago? A Practical Timeline

October 5, 2026ยท5 min read

Installing and turning on are two different dates

Most people think of "putting up Christmas lights" as one event, usually the weekend after Thanksgiving. In practice it's easier to split it in two: hang the lights while the weather is still workable, then switch them on whenever you're ready for the season to start.

Nobody expects your display to be lit in early November. Lights sitting on the roofline unlit for a few weeks look like nothing at all from the street, and they save you from working on a ladder in sleet.

Why Chicago homeowners should install in late October or early November

Weather is the main reason. By late November, Chicago-area roofs and gutters can be wet, icy or covered in snow, and ladders on frozen ground are one of the more common ways people get hurt during the holidays. A dry, mild day in early November is a far safer time to be on the roof.

Hands matter too. Clipping hundreds of bulbs along a gutter line is fiddly work, and it's much harder with cold fingers or gloves. Stakes for pathway and landscape lights also go in easily before the ground freezes, and can be close to impossible to set after.

Finally, installing early gives you time to fix problems. If a strand is dead, an outlet trips or a timer misbehaves, you find out with weeks to spare instead of the night your family arrives.

A realistic holiday lighting timeline

Early to mid October: decide on the design and book a professional installer if you're using one. This is when most installation calendars fill up.

Late October to mid November: lights go up. Gutters should be cleaned first, because clips attach to the gutter edge and a gutter packed with wet leaves is a poor base for a display.

The weekend after Thanksgiving: switch them on. This is the traditional start in the Chicago area, though many families light up a week or two earlier.

Early to mid January: turn them off and take them down once the weather allows. Many HOAs and villages expect decorations removed by the end of January, so check your local rules.

Why booking early matters if you hire a pro

Professional installers work in a short window, roughly from late October to early December, and every customer wants the same few weeks. By mid November, popular dates are often gone and the remaining ones may be after Thanksgiving.

Booking in October also leaves room for custom work. Measuring rooflines, ordering the right length of C7 or C9 strands, and planning tree and landscape lighting all take time, and are easier to get right when they aren't rushed.

What a professional installation includes

Our holiday lighting service starts at $299 and covers the whole season: custom design, installation along rooflines, gutters and architectural edges, a secure electrical setup with timers, maintenance if anything goes out during the season, and takedown after the holidays. We can also store your lights between seasons so they don't take over the garage.

We use commercial-grade LED bulbs, which use far less electricity than old incandescent strings and hold up better in Chicago wind and cold.

Thinking about skipping the ladder every year?

Permanent outdoor lighting is installed once along the roofline and controlled from a phone app. It can show warm white for everyday accent lighting, red and green for Christmas, orange for Halloween or red, white and blue for the Fourth of July, without anyone going back on the roof.

Whether you want a classic seasonal display or a permanent system, request a free estimate and we'll help you pick a design and lock in an installation date before the rush.
