How to Clean Gutters on a Two-Story House Safely (Or When to Call a Pro)
Why two-story gutters are a different job than single-story
A single-story gutter is a 6–8 foot ladder job. A two-story gutter is a 20+ foot extension ladder job, usually set up against a surface you can't always see clearly from the ground, often over landscaping, downspouts, or hardscaping that makes a fall far more dangerous. The math on risk changes completely once you're working two stories up with both hands off the ladder to scoop debris.
Ladder-related falls are consistently among the most common causes of serious home-maintenance injuries in the fall and spring gutter-cleaning seasons — and gutters are one of the few home tasks where the person doing the work is, by definition, working at height, off-balance, reaching sideways.
If you're doing it yourself anyway
Use a stabilizer or standoff attachment on the ladder so it doesn't rest directly against the gutter edge, which can bend aluminum gutters or make the ladder unstable on an uneven lip. Never lean or reach — move the ladder instead. Have a second person holding the base at all times; a huge share of ladder accidents happen when no one is spotting.
Clear debris by hand into a bucket rather than tossing it down, and flush each downspout afterward with a hose to confirm it's actually draining — a gutter can look clear and still have a clogged downspout underneath, which defeats the whole purpose of cleaning it.
