How Long After Pressure Washing Should You Wait to Stain a Deck?
The short answer: 24–72 hours, weather dependent
In warm, sunny, low-humidity conditions, a deck can be dry enough to stain in about 24 hours. In typical Chicago spring or fall conditions — cooler, more humid, less direct sun — plan on 48–72 hours. If it rains during that window, the clock effectively restarts, because the wood needs to fully release the moisture it absorbed both from the wash and the rain.
This is the single most skipped step in DIY deck projects, and it's also the most common reason stain peels, bubbles, or looks blotchy within the first year — trapped moisture underneath the coating has nowhere to go, so it pushes the stain back off the surface as it evaporates.
How to actually tell if the wood is ready
Sprinkle a few drops of water on the deck boards. If the water beads up and sits on the surface, the wood is still too wet (or still has old sealant on it) — wait longer. If the water soaks in within a few seconds, the wood is dry and porous enough to accept new stain properly.
Boards in shaded areas, near the house foundation, or between deck boards where airflow is limited will always dry slower than open, sun-exposed sections — check multiple spots, not just one, before starting.
What a proper deck refresh includes
Washing is only the first step. A full refresh includes cleaning, appropriate dry time, light sanding on any raised grain or rough spots, and then a stain or sealant matched to the wood type and sun exposure. Skipping any one of those steps is why so many DIY deck projects need to be redone within 12–18 months instead of lasting the 2–3 years a properly done job should hold up.
