Water spilling over the edge during rain instead of running through the downspout is the clearest sign — it means something is already blocking the channel. Visible plant growth, sagging sections, or gutters that look like they're pulling away from the fascia are also signs of standing water sitting in them longer than it should.
Pests are another tell: gutters packed with wet leaves are a common nesting spot for mosquitoes, birds, and rodents. If you're noticing more activity around the roofline than usual, clogged gutters are a common cause.

In winter, water that can't drain properly is also what leads to ice dams — heavy ridges of ice that back up under roof shingles and cause interior leaks. A gutter clog in November is often the direct cause of a ceiling stain discovered in January.
